Rodney Stuckey might have been the first NBA player to set a career high in assists out of spite.

Stuckey didn't admit that he purposely passed up shots in Wednesday's 107-93 victory over Toronto, but it sure looked that way. Detroit's leading scorer attempted just one shot, a missed layup on a fast break, while notching 14 assists.

"I passed up a couple of shots when I should have shot the ball, but I was just looking for my teammates," he said. "It's just the way the game developed. A lot of people don't know I'm a good passer, so I tried to showcase that tonight."

Heat teammates have relished the recent breakout from backup center Jamaal Magloire, who has gone from afterthought and inactive to a contributor in the injury-prompted absence of Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

"He's the true definition of staying ready," guard Dwyane Wade said of Magloire. "He's been in a suit most of the year and hasn't really got an opportunity. He's gotten a chance to play, and he's played well. He's playing every minute like it's his last, and we love him for it. He's just a true professional."

It's hard to imagine the Hawks playing better basketball without All-Stars Joe Johnson and Al Horford than they do with those two stalwarts.

But it's not as farfetched as it sounds.

The Hawks found out the hard way, having been on the receiving end of a whipping from the new-look Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night at Philips Arena.

"They really spread you out," Horford said. "They have six or seven weapons. They're a great team. We play like that at times. Other times, we don't. We'd be better a team if we played like them."

The Wizards might have to make a decision soon, not on a player or a coach, but on whether they want to continue with their current front office.

Ernie Grunfeld has been the Wizards' president of basketball operations through two contracts. He survived the fallout from last season's gun incident involving the now-departed Gilbert Arenas.

But the Wizards are going to have to get good quickly, especially if they don't want to hear those whispers that John Wall might not be happy with the way things are going in Washington. If that starts to become the case in a few years, Wall might start to think about exploring his options in more attractive locales.

One of the things the Raptors need to find out in the final few weeks of the season is what they have in backup point guard Jerryd Bayless, who can expect more playing time as the season drones on.

It's taken Bayless a little bit of time not only to get comfortable with his new teammates but with the notion that he's most effective looking to score more often than pass.

"I think just over time, everybody's getting more comfortable with each other," he said.

Bayless, with at least another year left on his contract, should get more chances late this season to show what he can do. With a 14-48 record, the Raptors are playing out the string on the season, more concerned with what the long-term future looks like than the next few weeks.

Other than point guard Ty Lawson, who got a starting job out of it, no holdover Nuggets player has benefitted more than center Nene from the team's blockbuster trade last month.

Nene has been Denver's leading scorer and rebounder since the Nuggets dispatched their top two scorers, Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, to New York on Feb. 22.

In the 11 games since the deal, with Denver having won nine, Nene is averaging 15.7 points and 9.1 rebounds to raise his season averages to 15.1 and 7.5.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy doesn't sound too optimistic when it comes to the upcoming playoffs. The turnovers are driving him nuts.

The Magic may have beaten the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, clinching a playoff berth and closing their road trip with a 3-2 record, but Van Gundy wasn't painting a very bright picture about the postseason.

"It (turning the ball over) has become a serious problem," he said. "The inability to protect the ball has me concerned. You're not going to win many playoff games committing this many turnovers. We just don't seem to put much value in taking care of the ball."

"It's a credit to their defense," Pacers interim coach Frank Vogel said. "They're the best defensive team in the league. They took us out of a lot of our stuff."

The Pacers didn't have one starter shoot better than 50 percent from the field.

The two teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs if the Celtics can hold onto the top seed in the East and the Pacers can maintain the eighth spot. Boston and Chicago were tied for first place in the conference after the Celtics' win over the Pacers.
